Pathway Diagram Formats

From the Pathways diagram, or from the Pathways report you can export diagrams to your desktop or thumbdrive. Simply click on the icon for the type of image you want, and tell it where to save the file.

Learn about your needs by researching image types. We can’t explain all the pros and cons of each of the types here, but will suggest how we have used different formats.

SVG – screen vector graphic – we use this for importing into Adobe Illustrator and working with our images – coloring paths or changing line thicknesses – things like that. We export from Illustrator into EMF to be able to put it in powerpoint.

EMF – enhanced Windows metafile  – seems to be the best for putting in powerpoint presentations or doing posters. Using the newer Office software we have also found we can edit the images in powerpoint, since this is also a vecot graphis format. (Hint – if you’re creating a powerpoint using any image, you should view the display at large zooms – some other images (like jpg) will be too grainy to show in a presentation.

JPEG – joint photographic experts group – used mainly for photographs, not particularly good for text. It could do an acceptable printed document in a small size, but won’t work well for zooming or putting in presentations.

TIFF – tagged image file format – good for storing images with text, as the detail is not lost.

GIF – grafics Interchange Format – bitmap image with 256 colors. Suitable for pathways models, but limited in color range (such as that used in digitial photography).

PNG – portable network graphics – more color options than GIF

PDF – portable document format – Adobe
